Legionellosis and other infectious diseases caused by bad water hygiene management can lead to a detrimental and sometimes fatal outcome. These diseases are statutorily notifiable in Ireland under the infectious Diseases regulations 2011. Causes of outbreaks should be notified to the Department of public health.
Tips and Recommendations
✔ Carry out a Risk assessment for the workplace which should identify any risks and hazards.
✔ All facilities should have a water safety plan.
✔ An up to date schematics of the water distribution system.
✔ Steps to avoid stagnant water /Biofilm.
✔ Timed or Temperature Flushing system - Underused water outlets such as sinks ,showers, toilets and Emergency Eye wash /shower stations particularly end of line are big risk areas.
✔ Water temperature is vital . Keep hot water hot and cold water cold .
✔ Keep hot water stored and circulating above 60 degrees /c and return pipe not below 55 degree /c
✔ Cold water should be kept below 20 degrees/c
✔ Pressure and flow must be maintained and monitored throughout the distribution system .
✔ Intelligent water management systems and automated flushing regimens with Temperature control and record keeping should be considered .
✔ Materials ,fixtures and fittings that support Biofilm and micro-oranism growth and colonisation should be avoided.
